Growers; Lots of boys!

I seem to be good at hatching and growing cockerels!
Theres 2 Silver Birchen pekins, 2 Cotswold Olives (Araucana crosses), 2 Araucanas and 3 Frizzle Silkies; 2 of which I think are boys.
This cute little Quigley baby (Frizzle Silkie) is going to live with one of my customers and 10 hybrid girls... Will need a couple months growing before moving in with his wives though!

Obsessed with hatching...

Lewis has gone from broody to obsessed!

I thought about setting a few quail eggs in my incy at Uni, got a bit carried away and bought 40 eggs from a breeder and another 36 from the Organic shop on my street who said they are fertile - they're due on the 21st, Nat's birthday.
'Cos of that and already having 12 bantie eggs in my Octagon 10, I needed another incy so my friend Lee saved the day + lend me his! :)

Then, I was on eBay and saw an MS Broedmachine incy on there. They're the best you can buy, made in the Netherlands and so don't often come up for sale... so I kinda bought it!

Is in Nottingham so ma friend at Uni there has collected it for me and I'll go pick it up.
One of these:

Annie, ma pekin, was on 3 eggs due this weekend but only one has hatched so far - a Speckled Sussex x Araucana which if is a girl should lay green eggs. Not sure if the other 2 will hatch late or not at all.

Have got ma brooder ready for the quail chicks too (if they hatch)!
Is a Hagen Vision bird cage (like eglu's for budgies!) which has a deeper tray than my indoor rabbit cages so should keep them warm. I've got a big double height one of the cages for ma Diamond Doves and really like them!

Just a photo of my Lavender Pekin growers I hatched from my lot over the Summer...

They're living in a hutch in the greenhouse for now until they're old enough to go in the eglu and integrate with the others!

New chicken bedding - CushionBed

Have been to get a new bedding called CushionBed for the chickens. Its made from chopped wood similar to easibed, rather than hemp which Hemcore + Aubiose are made from.

Went to get it straight from the manufacturers so was really cheap - a third of the price I pay for Aubiose which I usually use!
Can see Cilla + the chicks in there with them - they've been FRing together for a while and all get on ok.

I put Dot + Britney S Pears, the 2 older chicks, in the WIR with the 2 littles and they got on fine too.

Chicks Update - 6 weeks old

Esmerelda has come away from "Britney S Pears" now and have got her a new little friend from work, Cotswold Chickens :)

She's a Mottled Pekin we hatched in the shop, so is a few weeks older + quite a bit bigger that Brit but they've been together a few days and are getting on fine. Have got 2 feed stations in there so they can both get to them.

Think she's going to be called Dot!

Chicks Update - 4 weeks old

Got some photos of the chicks...
Cilla and her 3 are doing well :)

They're in the Go inside the Cube run atm...

Looks like the 2 Mottled chicks are boys though! :(
Can see their diddy little combs on this photo!

Eliza is laying

Eliza the Barred Wyandotte I hatched earlier in the year, has started laying :D

They were all FRing in the snow yesterday and she toddles off into the WIR early. Went and had a look + I couldn't see her but could hear her *eh*

Looked and she was in an old feed bin which was laying on its side on top of the wendy house! Thought she was stuck so scooped her out and there was a cold egg in there, so it wasn't laid just.

She flew back onto the roof, shuffled backwards and slid into the bin...

Left her to it + went back an hour later and there was a warm egg in there! :)

Well done Eliza :P

Out with the Old, In with the New... Dinner Chickens

So, as we've got the 3 new hybrids, the cockerels have to go :(

I was going to do it yesterday but left it too late so just got the stuff ready; bin for the feathers, small broomstick pole and a chair!
Let the 3 cockerels out for a free range in the snow earlier but restricted their food so that they're easier to gut etc.

Got Little Miss Meaty (the name stuck for him) in the eglu so I could pick him up and took him to the side passage.
I was alright in doing it 'cos have know since they were cute little chicks under Hilary that I'd have to do it:

Was alright doing 'the deed' but you always get paranoid from the nervous responses that you haven't done it properly even though I knew he was dead, and I had to double and triple check :/

Plucking was alright. It took about an hour to do, which is way longer than the huge turkeys at the farm! but tbf I haven't done it for a while, and the turkeys are hung so that makes it a lot easier. Ripped the skin a couple of times by the breast but thats not a problem.

Just got Mr Meaty to do next!
Was going to do him tonight but he's still not very muscly + mature, and it would leave Mr Dinosaur on his own in the eglu. Mr Meaty doesn't really crow, although he probably will now Little Miss has gone, but will see. I can always do it in the next couple of days.
